Headaches are one of the most common health complaints worldwide and can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. While most headaches are temporary, understanding the type and cause can help you find effective relief and prevent future episodes.

Types of Headaches

  • Tension Headaches – These are the most common type, often described as a constant, dull ache on both sides of the head. They may feel like a tight band around the forehead or back of the neck and are usually triggered by stress, anxiety, or poor posture.

  • Migraines – Migraines are intense, throbbing headaches that often come with nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. They may last from hours to days and often affect one side of the head. Migraines can be triggered by various factors, including certain foods, stress, hormonal changes, and sleep disturbances.

  • Cluster Headaches – Known for severe pain around one eye, cluster headaches occur in cycles or “clusters” and are often accompanied by tearing, redness, or nasal congestion. They may come and go for weeks or months before disappearing, only to recur later.

  • Sinus Headaches – These occur when sinuses become inflamed due to allergies, infections, or other conditions. The pain is usually felt around the forehead, cheeks, and nose and can worsen with sudden head movements.

Common Causes of Headaches

Headaches can be triggered by numerous factors, including:

  • Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension, causing tension headaches.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration headaches.
  • Sleep Issues: Lack of sleep or disrupted sleep patterns are common triggers.
  • Diet: Skipping meals or consuming caffeine, alcohol, and certain foods can lead to headaches.
  • Environmental Factors: Strong smells, loud noises, and bright lights can also contribute to headaches.
